is used by UCR to assess student readiness in mathematics for University work and to determine the appropriate placement. Students must satisfy placement requirements before registering for this subject at UCR. Examination results are used for advising and placement purposes only; unit credit cannot be earned with these exams.

Students that need special accommodations

If special accommodations for testing are needed due to a disability, please contact Services for Students with Disabilities. Appropriate documentation of need for accommodations must be provided prior to approval of testing arrangements.

Also, at UCR, we are able to test students with disabilities who require testing accommodations at any time. This also includes accommodations during the months of July and August. Please contact us if you'd like to take the exam at UCR at a time other than those scheduled on this site. If you require accommodations for a disability, please fill out a reservation form at least 2 weeks in advance of the exam date. Documentation of disability will be required. Students from out of state or out of the country

In the Spring, new incoming freshmen will be contact via email with special instructions about taking the MAE. Please be patient and we will contact you to let you know when and where you can take the exam. The email will be sent to your UCR email account so please be sure to check there.

Test Dates/Times

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • YOU MUST HAVE A PHOTO ID ON DAY OF EXAM. CLICK HERE TO SEE ACCEPTABLE FORMS OF ID. A photocopy or picture of the ID will NOT be accepted.
  • You will only be charged for this exam one time. Billing is based on those that actually took the exam. Making a reservation is important in order to have enough testing materials for administering the exam.
  • A confirmation email is sent to the email address that you provide in the reservation form. If you do not receive a confirmation email, please check your junk mail folder for a message from "Placement Test Coordinator" before contacting us.
  • We give exams all year long. Future test dates are always being added. Please check back periodically if you need to take an exam.

  • Click on the "P" to see parking location closest to the exam room. IMPORTANT: ***At UCR, permits are required at all times all year long. It is up to the student to purchase a permit. Full exam time is around 3 hours from the listed time below. So please purchase a permit accordingly. There is a kiosk at the main entrance to the campus as well as dispensers in some lots.
  • To update your information or cancel a reservation: Please select from the drop down button on the reservation form. The latest information submitted will update and replace the previous form.

In the months of May and June, an attendant will be on duty before the exam time. The attendant will be giving out a free 5 hour permit. Once the attendant leaves, it is up to the student to purchase a permit as they are required at all times. If the attendant is gone, you are likely too late to take the exam

RETESTING POLICY

Students are allowed to take the MAE a second time under specific conditions.

The conditions to become eligible to retake the MAE are as follows (all conditions must be met):

1) You are a new incoming student (freshmen or transfer) to UCR.
2) You take the exam in May or June (at any testing location) prior to your first quarter of matriculation, i.e. you haven't taken any classes at UCR yet.
3) You must complete a set of Preparation Modules in an online learning system. Currently, that system is ALEKS and costs $40 to access. These modules must be completed 2 days before you plan to take the MAE for a second time.
4) Retakes of the MAE must be completed by the last available retest date in August. No retests will be allowed after the last date posted on the MAE website.

Retesting Details

There are a 7 modules total. Student must complete the modules at the percentages listed below  in order to become eligible to retake the MAE. Also, only one part of the MAE will be taken again to determine a new placement. The higher of the 2 score on that part will be used to determine placement. 

 CRITERIA FOR ELIGIBILITY TO RETEST

ALEKS PREPARATION MODULES SCORES RETESTING ELIGIBILITY
If one part of Modules 1-4 are < 75% Not eligible to retest
If each part of 1-4 is > 75% AND any one part of Modules 5-7 < 50% Eligible to retake MAE part 1 for placement into Math 4 or Math 6A
If each part of Modules 1-4 is > 75% AND each part of Modules 5-7 > 50% Eligible to retaking MAE Part 2 for placement into Math 5, 7A, 9A or 22.

INFORMATION ABOUT ALEKS

Information about creating an ALEKS account and how to get started is coming by the end of April. There is a cost ($40) to use ALEKS but that is paid directly to the ALEKS website for 6 weeks of access.  

RESTEST DATES

These are the only dates that students will be allowed to retest. You must retake the MAE on one of these dates. Also, you must complete the necessary Preparation Modules at least 2 days before retaking the MAE. The part of the MAE that you will retake will be based on your Learned percentage in ALEKS.
