Mathematics Advisory Exam (MAE) Retest Option

retest option is for new freshmen or transfer students that have not taken a math class at UCR.

Starting in May 2018, incoming students that take the MAE at any location in May or June may have a chance to take the MAE a second time. Upon completion of work in ALEKS PPL, students will be allowed to retake the MAE again. Students that place into ARC 35, will have to take both parts of the MAE while all other placements will only need to take part 2. Once a student has retaken the MAE, they may not retake the MAE again.
NOTE: Math 7A and Math 9A are the highest placements that can be attained on the MAE. Retaking the MAE with one of these placement will not change your placement.

The conditions to become eligible to retake the MAE are as follows (all conditions must be met):

  1. You are a new incoming student (freshmen or transfer) to UCR in Fall 2018.
  2. You take the exam in May or June (at any testing location) prior to your first quarter of matriculation, i.e. you haven't taken any classes at UCR yet.
  3. You must prepare for the retest using the preparation portion of ALEKS PPL for a minimum of 3 hours. You will take a pre-assessment in ALEKS PPL, work for a minimum of 3 hours in the preparation portion of the program and then take an ALEKS PPL assessment again (no minimum score or percentage change is required). Once the 3 hours is completed and you've retaken the ALEKS assessment, you will be eligible to retake the MAE. NOTE: There is a 24 hour cooling off period between completing 3 hours of preparation and taking the 2nd assessement.
If you didn't score much higher in ALEKS on your second assessment, we recommend that you continue to work in the preparation portion to build your skills. Also, the ALEKS assessments can be taken up to 5 times.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The ALEKS PPL assessments will not be used or considered in your placement.
  4. Retakes of the MAE should be completed before the student attends their Highlander Orientation. No retests will be allowed after the last date posted on the MAE website. Also, you must have completed a 2nd assessment and make a reservation 2 days prior to your retest date.
  5. Lastly, you MUST make a reservation to retake the MAE. We CANNOT take walk ins at retests. We must be able to verify that you completed your work in ALEKS PPL by the morning of the exam.

The ALEKS PPL will open for registration on June 1, 2018.  Access to ALEKS PPL will close on August 6, 2018.

There is a cost associated with this opportunity. There is a $15 fee to access ALEKS PPL. This is paid directly to ALEKS via their website. You will be able to take up to 5 assessments to test your skills. You must complete 3 hours of preparation in ALEKS PPL and take a second assessment in order to be eligilble to retest.

There is no additional fee to retake the MAE. Students should retake the MAE prior to coming to Highlander Orientation.
